I've played guitar until my fingers couldn't take it anymore. And i'm still feeling bored.
This has been a pretty funny week. It's so guitar-ish for the past few days.
Monday: The 2 guitarists from the band R.E.I. came over my house. Needed me to set up their effect pedals and to see Vincent's latest acquisition: a BC Rich Beast. Crazy looking guitar, suitable for a Visual Kei band.
Tuesday: My NDU bunkmate Jerrard came all the way from Bedok to learn some guitar from me. It's been a while since i saw him, but nothing has changed. Probably alittle weight gain like me haha.
Today: Bumped into Michelle's dad in the kopitiam. He's a pretty good blues guitarist. Had lunch and chatted a while with him.
My point? Nothing.
Xiang wants to re-form a band to jam and gig ard. I believe it's partly because there've been plenty of gigs in RP and he thinks they suck => we have a better chance than them. But whenever we come to this band thingy i get alittle uptight again. Here's the reason why:
In my opinion, the 2 most important members in the band are the drummer and the vocalist. If u have a crap singer, the crowd will cringe when u open ur mouth. Regardless of whether the music is good or not. Just watch Superband/Singapore Idol to get a good idea. If u have a crap drummer, then ur music is gonna get jerky. Uneven tempo. Like a spoilt tape.
Frankly speaking i do not think we have a very decent drummer in terms of Xiang. He can play for sure, but it's definitely not good enough to go gigging. Irregular tempos, can't really fill in when there's the need to. And his arsenal of grooves is not wide enough, so that really limits his versatility => he can only play rock and tt's it.
Singer-wise, Kai is alright enough. He can probably hold a tune or two. But he's not the singer singer u know what i mean. He's more like "ok Kai sings the best amongst us, so Kai shall sing". And he has the irritating habit of insisting on playing the guitar, even tho he's not really that good cos Biao is much better than him. Another thing, he's a regular, so he can't really commit to this nonsense. Same goes for Han Yuan.
And if ever had the slightest thought of asking me to sing, i'd say fuck you. My singing sucks, u know i know, shirui knows best. The only only reason i sing in my songs is well, they are MY songs. Quite easy to understand right. If i had a singer friend who is interested to sing my song, well he/she can always go ahead and i'd do the recording for them right away. Or maybe form a collaboration or something.
One thing abt this band hype is tt i believe it will dissipate over time. Because there's a very very strong reluctance for Xiang to jam outside, which means we can only find musicians who live close to us. Bassists are already a very scarce commodity in the music scene, good bassists are even harder to find. What makes u think we can find a Good Bassist that lives near Jurong West Street 42? Han Yuan was a prize find. Cos he's really good and has the experimental/improvisational vibe in him. And he wants to shred on the bass somemore. But we can't really use him, cos like my brother, he's a bloody regular.
So unless Xiang is willing to jam outside, this thing is not really gonna work.
Fortunately for this round, i'm not the band leader. I dun wanna do all this shit work anymore. Let Xiang do it and we'll see how it turns out.
Finally i got to befriend this fella who lives in my neighbourhood. His name is Jonathan. I see him ard the area pretty frequently, always lugging his guitar ard. He plays for this band Funkadelics Inc. Seems pro, but i havent heard him play before. He's got quite a solid setup too, and a self-modified guitar. Cool dude i'd say, other than the fact tt he speaks funny.
Still working on my little radiohead-ish tune. Can't seem to find a breakthrough in terms of: getting the right drum beat, the vocal melody, the LYRICS, song structure. All i have are just the tunes for both guitars. Help?
Enough bullshit for tonight.
